A Miyawaki forest is a densely planted, multi-layered native forest, structured with canopy, sub-canopy, and shrub layers, designed to establish quickly and become self-sustaining. On this Little Compton property, a large portion of the land had become inaccessible due to ecologically damaging overgrowth of introduced species. PSGC began with careful hand-clearing to assess what was already present and develop a broader plan for the site. Plants were selected based on the ecology of nearby native forests, including the Atlantic white cedar plant community, and chosen for their tolerance of the site's characteristically acidic soils. This microforest will be installed this spring and will suppress regrowth of undesired species, replenish the native seed bank, and over time extend its influence across the property as seeds travel on prevailing winds.
