Stewardship
The food forest at Roger Williams Park was originally established around 2012 as a thesis project, installed with support from URI Master Gardeners. PSGC has since taken on active stewardship of the site, in partnership with the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, which has provided tools, volunteer resources, and connections to other groups working in and around the park. In fall 2025, PSGC hosted a community workday to assess conditions, clear pathways, prune, mulch, and begin rebuilding a culture of care around the forest. The site, a rare large tract within a historic urban park, offers an unusual setting for teaching permaculture principles, tree care, companion planting, and ecological design. Seasonal programming and self-guided signage are in development, with the goal of opening the forest as a living classroom accessible to the broader Providence community.
