This project began with the community itself: more than 1,200 residents of the 02908 and 02909 zip codes voted to prioritize planting a community orchard as a way to improve neighborhood health and well-being. Sites were selected for their proximity to schools, libraries, and existing public infrastructure. PSGC worked collaboratively with PNPP to design the orchard around resilient, low-maintenance fruit and nut trees, native shrubs, perennial pollinator plantings, species and combinations chosen to support biodiversity, build soil health, and offer beauty and utility across every season. Site preparation included junk removal, sheet mulching, soil amendment, and woodchip application.

Central to the project is a commitment to local stewardship. Seasonal workdays and community events bring people together to prune, mulch, and celebrate the growing orchards. The sites are intended as welcoming public spaces offering shade, fresh harvest, educational signage, and ongoing opportunities for gathering.
